Chico State’s Mario Giannini named Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week after stellar debut

Chico State’s Mario Giannini made a splashing collegiate debut to earn this week’s CCAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week award.

Giannini won the Ash Creek Festival at the Ash Creek Preserve on Friday. He clocked in at 17:27.6 in the 6K race on the course which will serve as the West Region championships on Nov. 4. 

The freshman from Chico led a pack of five Wildcats as they finished 1-5 for a perfect team score to win the event ahead of host Western Oregon. Giannini was 12 seconds better than teammate, and runner-up, Daniel Hernandez.

Chico State’s perfect scoring also included Dylan White, Anders Beil and Brayden McClaughlin.

The next meet for Chico State will be the Cougar Challenge on Sept. 23 in San Marcos.
