Cal Poly Pomona repeats as CCAA Women's Track & Field Champions

[Results]

The race for the 2023 CCAA Women's Track & Field Championship all came down to the final event of the meet; the 4x400 meter relay. Cal Poly Pomona held a half-point lead over Chico State going into the last relay. The Wildcats needed to finish at least one spot ahead of the Broncos to earn the title. In the end, it was the Green & Gold uniform crossing the finish line first as the top-rated relay team from CPP won the event and captured the CCAA Women's Track & Field Championship for the second consecutive season.

The Broncos finished with 191 points to win the title. Chico State placed second with 185.5 points, and Cal State San Marcos was in third (106.75).

Ayana Fields repeated as the CCAA Track Athlete of the Meet, and she earned the High Point Award for the second straight year. Fields was one of just three student-athletes to win multiple events at the championships. She won the women's 200m, which was by far the deepest field at the 2023 CCAA Championships. Seven of the eight sprinters earned NCAA Provisional Marks in the finals race, but Fields was able to outpace the group by nearly a half-second (22.92) to defend her title. She is now tied for the top time in NCAA Division II. Second-place finisher Sariyah Copeland (CSUSB) is fifth in the country (23.38).

Field also defended her title in the 400m with a time of 54.45. She won the race by 1.27 seconds and is ranked 11th nationally. The Los Angeles native also ran the anchor leg on both championship relay teams. She paired up with fellow Broncos Jaelyn Thomas, Kelsey Ehinlaiye, and Yuna Queniat to record a time of 45.48. Thomas, Queniat, Fields, and Arissa Hatcher secured the Broncos' victory by winning the 4x400m with a time of 3:46.50. The win also brought the total points accounted for by Fields up to 25 and earned her the High Point Award.

These would be four of the eight event titles Cal Poly Pomona would capture en route to winning the championship.

Susie Fowler won the 100m hurdles with an NCAA Provisional Time of 13.82, and Hatcher took first place in the 800m (2:15.24). Of the 191 total points for the Broncos, 138 came from running events, including 103 in the sprints and hurdles.

Jade De Souza and Shona Christensen gave the Broncos two gold medals from field events. De Souza won the triple jump with a mark of 40-5.5 (12.33m), and Christensen took first place in the shot put (41-1/12.52m). De Souza is the first triple jump champion for CPP since 1998.

Chico State's Marissa D'Atri and Stanislaus State's Caitlyn Bell joined Fields as the only student-athletes to win multiple first-place medals at the 2023 Championships. D'Atri defended her conference titles in both the 5k and 3k steeplechase. She bettered her 2022 time in the 5k by over six seconds with a 17:03.06 and won gold in the steeple with a time of 10:57.74.

Caitlyn Bell captured her victories in the women's discus and hammer throw. She started the meet on Thursday with a victory in the discus (135-11/41.43m). She then threw the hammer over 13 feet further than second place and won the event with a 176-0 (53.65m). She was named the Field Athlete of the Meet.

Stanislaus State's Najwa Chouati was voted the CCAA Newcomer of the Meet. The Bridgeton, Mo., native won the 1500m with an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 4:31.44. She also placed second in the 5k (17:07.98).

The CCAA Freshman of the Meet Award went to Sonoma State's Gianna Bomarito, who broke the meet record in the 10k on Thursday with a time of 34:40.57. She added a third-place finish in the 5k to earn 16 points for the Warriors, who placed fifth with 56 points.

Cal Poly Pomona's Chris Bradford was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. He helped lead Ayan Fields to the High Point Award and CCAA Track Athlete of the Meet honors. Nineteen Broncos also captured All-CCAA honors (top 3 in their event).

Chico State's Elise Barnum was the recipient of the conference's Elite 13 Award. The junior Childhood Development major had the highest cumulative GPA among all competitors that reached the CCAA Championships. She finished third in the pole vault after clearing 11-8.5 (3.57m).
