Dontrell Shuler’s sharp shooting was key in leading CSUSB to two victories as he’s been named the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week of Feb. 13-19.
Shuler shot 70 percent from the field (18 of 27) to lead the Yotes to road wins at Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State. The tough road victories helped No. 12 CSUSB inch closer to securing the regular season championship.
The junior guard from Columbia, S.C. scored a season-high 30 points Thursday night to lift the Yotes in a late, come-from-behind rally to beat the Lumberjacks in the final seconds of the contest. He was 11 of 17 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the foul line with three steals. Saturday, in another thriller at Sonoma State, Shuler scored 19 points (7 for 10) with four assists and two steals.
This was Shuler’s second player of the week nod this season. He earned the season’s first award back on Nov. 14. Shuler is third in the CCAA in scoring with 18.0 points per game. He has the eighth best field goal percentage of .473.
Consequently, CSUSB completed and won a suspended game at Cal State Monterey Bay Monday afternoon to clinch the CCAA regular season title with its eighth straight win.
CSUSB, the top seed in the upcoming CCAA Tournament, will conclude its regular season schedule at home versus Chico State and Stanislaus State this weekend.
