CSUEB’s Jaela Richardson wins Player of the Week award with two double-doubles

For the second straight week, a Pioneer has captured the Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award. This time it goes to Jaela Richardson, for the week of Feb. 6-12.

Richardson netted 50 points in two games to average 25.0 points per game to lead Cal State East Bay to a split on the road. The junior also averaged 10.5 rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and 1.5 steals per game. She shot 51 percent from the field, hitting 21 of 41 attempts. She also made 8 of 11 free throws.

The forward from Saginaw, Mich., scored a season-best 30 points to go with 10 rebounds in Thursday’s 90-68 win at Cal Poly Humboldt. On Saturday, Richardson scored 20 with 11 rebounds as the Pioneers lost at Sonoma State in overtime on a Seawolf buzzer-beater. 

Richardson has posted a double-double in four consecutive games. Her teammate Delia Moore was the player of the week winner last week.

Amongst the CCAA leaders, Richardson ranks ninth in scoring (13.9 ppg), eighth in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and has the fourth best field goal percentage of .492. She’s also fifth in blocked shots (1.1 per game).

Cal State East Bay will play at home this week to wrap-up its home schedule. The Pioneers host Cal State LA on Thursday and Cal State San Marcos on Saturday.
