SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The No. 2 seed Cal State San Bernardino hit .440 percent in the first round of the NCAA West Regional to sweep No. 7 Central Washington, 25-13, 25-22, and 25-18.
The Coyotes had only eight attacking errors in the match, and no more than four in any set, to register a season-best .440 hitting percentage.
Marlee Nunley was at the center of the Yotes' efficient offensive attack. The senior setter dished out 40 assists in just the three sets.
"
Marlee Nunley set a really, really smart match today," explained CSUSB
head coach Kim Cherniss. "She was superb from the setter position and allowed us to hit .440, which is phenomenal for an NCAA playoff match."
Jenna Patton led the way offensively, getting 10 kills on only 15 swings for a .667 hitting percentage.
Trinity Sheridan added a match-high 15 kills with just two errors for a .520 mark.
Ashley Robinson had 12 kills (.379 hit%), and
Savannah Hoffman (.429 hit%) added eight.
"The ladies don't give themselves enough credit, but they have worked all season long on their efficiency as an attacker," Cherniss continued. "They have been in the classroom all year long, and now they are at a point where their instincts are really good, and it's fun to watch because it's a validation of the things we teach in the program and their hard work in practice every day."
Four CSUSB student-athletes tied for the team lead with seven digs, and Taryn King registered four assisted blocks.
CSUSB opened the match by hitting .467 percent to take the opening set without much of a challenge. It had a 7-0 run, which extended its lead from 7-3 to 14-3, and the Yotes never looked back, going up 1-0. CSUSB trailed 20-17 in the second set before scoring eight of the final 10 points to capture the set. The third set was tied 13-13. Cal State San Bernardino then went on a 9-4 run, taking a 22-17 lead, which the Wildcats were unable to overcome.
Cal State San Bernardino will advance to the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional. It will face CCAA-foe Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m., with a spot in the regional final on the line.
