SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona outlasted a tough No. 6 seed Point Loma team, 25-22, 26-24, and 25-19, to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional for the second consecutive season.
Kaitlan Tucker led the way with 10 kills and five blocks. The senior middle blocker hit .417 percent without an error. Tucker was one of six Broncos with at least four kills as setter
Caitie Mueller distributed the ball to all her teammates.
Samantha Campion just missed a double-double with nine kills and tied
Avery Percival with a team-high 12 digs.
Daisy Duke added eight kills and nine digs. CPP also got five kills from
Emeline Hudson and four apiece from
Alexia Athans and
Madison Novak.
Anna Massari paced PLNU with 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage. Abigail Nua also had 10 kills, and Bailey Williams added a match-best 22 digs.
The first two sets both came down to the very end, and both times, Cal Poly Pomona was able to close out with late runs. In the first, CPP trailed 22-18, but they went on a 7-0 run to close the match with
Caitie Mueller on the serve.
The second set also contained a critical seven-point run for the Broncos. Trailing 16-9, they rattled off seven consecutive points to tie the match. CPP then faced game-point at 24-20. After a kill by
Madison Novak got the serve back for CPP, trailing 24-21, Mueller again went on a serving run, leading the Broncos to five straight points and a 26-24 win in set 2.
The third set was not in as much doubt. Cal Poly Pomona went up 8-3 and never surrendered the lead. PLNU cut it to two points at 12-10 and 17-15, but each time the Broncos answered. They closed the set and the match on a 5-2 run.
This was a school-record 15th sweep of the season for CPP.
Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the NCAA Regional semifinals, where it will face No. 2 seed and tournament host Cal State San Bernardino on Friday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
