LOS ANGELES - Simon Johansen again played postseason hero, scoring another game-winner in a 1-0 playoff win. In this latest version, his goal in the 56th lifted No. 2 seed Cal State LA to victory over No. 10 seed Point Loma in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA Super-Region 4.
Similar to what he did in the 2021 National Championship,
Simon Johansen netted one from the left side after a good offensive run, and
Carl Solli was a big part of it.
On Saturday, Solli took the ball at midfield and dribbled 25 yards before laying it off to
Aidan Wait on the right side of the box. The Point Loma defender was able to step to it and deflect it away. But that is when Johansen came into play. He collected the ball at the corner of the 18-yard box and sent it into the side net for his first goal of the season.
Cal State LA would get a few more chances to extend their lead on shots by Bryan Ortega and Carson Nguyen, but the Sea Lions managed to keep them out of the net, giving themselves a couple of equalizer opportunities.
Juan Salazar had two looks on goal, including one on a free kick that sailed just above the corner of the goal. The other was on a last-second scramble by PLNU, which saw Felix Calero's header tease that it might sneak inside the post.
Keeper
Julian Aalandsvik finished with a save for Cal State LA. Finn Simmerbach had two for Point Loma.
Cal State LA will advance to the Super-Region 4 semifinals to face Cal Poly Pomona. The game is scheduled for Nov. 30, but the site is yet to be determined.
