Cal Poly Pomona scored two goals in the first 10 minutes and held on for the 2-1 win over
Cal State Monterey Bay in the CCAA Tournament semifinals. (Nov. 10)
It was a near-even match between two of the best teams in the CCAA, but the first 15 minutes made all the difference.
Marcus Jorgensen gave the Broncos (13-1-4) the lead in the third minute when he rose above the crowd to head Max Laguna's corner kick into the back of the net.
Cal Poly Pomona tacked on another goal in the 10th minute on a penalty kick from
Woody Angell.
Paul Roger Henschke drew the foul after being dragged down from behind on a 1v1 against the keeper.
The Otters (12-4-4) answered the two goals with one of their own in the 13th minute to cut their deficit to 2-1. The 2023 CCAA Men's Soccer Elite 13 winner,
Janos Kommerling, took a free kick from 35 yards out and sent it to the far side of the box, where
Garrett Hayes sent the ball into the goal with a beautiful header.
From there, the match settled in, with the defenses limiting scoring opportunities. It remained 2-1 late in match when the Otters had a chance in front of the net, but Broncos' keeper
CJ Walker made a point-blank save to keep the lead. He finished with four saves, while his couterpart Jack Blickenstaff made three stops.
Cal Poly Pomona will advance to Sunday's CCAA Tournament Championship match at Noon. They will play the winner of Cal State LA and Cal State Monterey Bay. Cal State Monterey Bay hopes to continue its season in the NCAA Super-Regional next week. They were ranked No. 5 in the latest poll. The Otters will learn their fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday, Nov. 13.
