Cal Poly Pomona’s Ricardo Vargas has been named the first Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week this season after his performance on Saturday in Redlands.
The sophomore from Lake Arrowhead won the Redlands Invitational while leading the 22nd ranked Broncos to a team victory in the season’s opening event.
In his first ever collegiate cross country race, Vargas posted a time of 18:35 in the 6K race with an average mile time of 4:59.1.
He became CPP’s first individual champion since Alejandro Ambrosio won the Redlands Invitational to open the 2018 season.
It was the 38th time in program history that CPP has taken first place at a cross country meet, and the first team title since the Broncos won the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational back on Oct. 12, 2019.
Cal Poly Pomona had six of the top seven finishers in the men’s race on Saturday, posting an easy team win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Leandro Candray was second behind Vargas by four seconds.
CPP will race next on Sept. 24 at the Cougar Challenge at Cal State San Marcos.
