Mackenzie Gill collects second CCAA Offensive Player of the Week award Sep 27, 2022 Share: Complete list of weekly winners >>> Chico State’s Mackenzie Gill made conference history when she became the first student-athlete to claim two of the newly added CCAA Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors in the same season. (Sept. 19-26) Gill posted a brace and assist as the Wildcats opened conference play with a 3-1 win at Sonoma State Friday. She gave the Wildcats a two-goal cushion when she took a long pass from Susanna Garcia and used her first touch to play herself into the box. The striker put her defender in the spin cycle, eventually crossing over with a dribble before unleashing a cracker from just off the PK spot into the far-side netting for her first collegiate two-goal match. Her first goal leveled the match at 1-apiece in the eighth minute. She fought off two defenders for a loose ball at the top of the 18 following a failed clearance before spinning and ripping a left-footed blast inside the right post. Sandwiched between her two goals was arguably the Wildcats’ goal of the season thus far, which Gill played an important role in. Gill played a one-touch pass ahead to Piper Matson in behind the defense in the box and earned the assist when Matson chipped a pass to the PK spot for Natalie Mendoza, who deftly drove the ball over the keeper and into the top shelf for a 2-1 edge just 31 seconds into the second half. Ten minutes later, the Wildcats doubled their lead on Gill’s second goal. Gill did not score in the Wildcats’ 1-0 win at San Francisco State on Sunday. The senior from Roseville (Roseville HS) now ranks among the CCAA’s top 10 in goals (t-sixth, 3), assists (t-seventh, 2), and points (seventh, 8). She’s tied for the conference lead with two match winners. Gill earned her first CCAA Offensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 13 after posting a goal and an assist in a draw against Azusa Pacific. Chico State swept the CCAA Women’s Soccer weekly awards. Gill’s teammate and goalkeeper Emma Hofmann won this week’s CCAA Defensive Player of the Week. Chico State was one of only two teams to go 2-0-0 on the first week of CCAA play, along with Cal Poly Pomona. The Wildcats will welcome the Broncos to Chico on Friday, Sept. 30, and will host Cal State LA on Sunday, Oct. 2.
