Cal State LA’s Marlon Radel has been named the CCAA Defender of the Week for the week of Aug. 22-28.

The freshman defender stepped into a starting role and helped the defending national champ Golden Eagles extend their unbeaten streak to 20 consecutive matches with a pair of victories in British Columbia.

The Magstadt, Germany native, was part of the defense that posted two shutouts and held its opponents to 11 shots over 180 minutes. In the opener against Saint Martin’s, Radel scored the first match of the season for the Golden Eagles when he headed in a corner kick from Manuel Garcia seven minutes into the match. That goal would be the game-winner in the 6-0 win over the Saints.

On Saturday, against Simon Fraser, Radel helped keep the match scoreless until the 71st minute when Jeppe Paulsen broke through for the only goal. SFU would take only two more shots all match, both of which were saved by keeper Alvaro Unanua.

Radel is the first Cal State LA men’s soccer student-athlete to win a CCAA Player of the Week award since Alexander Brems on Oct. 14-20, 2019.

Cal State LA will return home to host Concordia at University Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
