CCAA Athletes of the Year >>>
Cal State San Bernardino’s Alexis Cardoza closed out her storied career by being named the 2021-22 CCAA Female Athlete of the Year by the 12 sports information staffs across the league. Cardoza is the third female to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons, the first since 2000.
For the third consecutive season, Cardoza was one of the top student-athletes in the nation. She led Cal State San Bernardino to its fifth straight CCAA Tournament Championship and was named the 2021 AVCA Division II National Player of the Year.
The Chino Hills native paced the CCAA this season in kills (3.97) and points per set (4.46). She posted double-figure kills in 26 of 30 matches, including a season-high 26 (in four sets) against Alaska Anchorage in the NCAA West Regional. Cardoza also added 299 digs, 48 total blocks, 28 aces, and 14 double-doubles.
The three-time CCAA Player of the Year helped the Yotes post a 23-match winning streak and rank as high as No. 2 in the AVCA national poll. CSUSB paced the conference in assists (12.68), blocks (2.09), and kills (13.83). The Yotes also finished the season ranked eighth in Division II in hitting percentage (.268) and 21st in kills per set.
The 2020-21 Academic All-American of the Year completes her career as a three-time AVCA All-American (2018, 2019, 2021), two-time CCAA Female Athlete of the Year, and a two-time AVCA Player of the Year. She was named the NCAA Championship Most Valuable Player after leading CSUSB to the 2019 NCAA title, completing just the third undefeated season in Division II history. Cardoza was also a three-time Academic All-American and West Region Player of the Year.
Cardoza is the fifth Cal State San Bernardino student-athlete to earn the CCAA’s year-ending award but the first to win it in consecutive seasons. All five hail from the volleyball program. She joins honorees Kim Morohunfola (2003-04) and Brianna Harris (2004-05), Jessica Granados (2008-09), and Class of 2019 CCAA Hall of Famer Samantha Middleborn (2011-12) as the league’s top female
athlete.
