Chico State's Charity Gallegos named Player of the Week for second time

Chico State’s Charity Gallegos has been named the CCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season, this time for the regular season’s final week of Feb. 21-27.

Gallego was also the season’s first winner for the week of Nov. 8-14.

This time around Gallegos averaged 18 points and four rebounds per game, leading Chico State to a 1-1 record, including clinching a CCAA Tournament berth on Thursday. The freshman from Folsom shot 54 percent from the floor in two games, going 14 for 26. She was a sharp-shooter from long distance, nailing 7 of 10 three-point attempts. Gallego also had eight assists and two steals.

Against CSUDH on Thursday, Gallego scored 18 points including the game-winner with 10 seconds left. Her driving left-handed layup past two defenders gave Chico State a 65-64 win over the Toros, securing a tournament berth for the Wildcats.

Gallegos, in a losing effort against Cal State East Bay on Saturday, netted 18 more points with five assists for the Wildcats.

Chico State will be the No. 5 seed in the CCAA Basketball Tournament powered by Under Armour. The Wildcats will face No. 4 Cal State Dominguez on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
