Matt Pennington picked up his second CCAA Men’s Golfer of the Week award after leading Cal State San Marcos to a victory at the Bay Area Invitational.

Pennington captured medalist honors at the tournament, hosted by Cal State East Bay at Ruby Hills Golf Club in Pleasanton. He shot an 8-under 208 for the victory, finishing five strokes ahead of teammate Matthew Moss in second place.

The sophomore from Carlsbad was the only player to shoot two sub-70 scores. He opened with a pair of tournament-low 67’s in the two rounds on Monday. With a huge lead, Pennington carded a 74 and still managed to win by five shots.

Cal State San Marcos won the tournament as the only team to not tally an over-par collective score. The Cougars were at even 864, 19 strokes ahead of second place Sonoma State.

The tournament win was CSUSM’s second consecutive victory this spring after winning the Fujikura Invitational last week. The Cougars also won the Sonoma State Invitational back in September to start the fall season.

Pennington has now won two tournaments this season. He won the Otter Invitational, Oct. 18-19, which earned him his other Golfer of the Week honor.

Cal State San Marcos plays in the NNU Poppy Ridge Invitational March 7-8 in Livermore.
