Cal State San Marcos’ Jason McElroy has been named the CCAA Men’s Golfer of the Week after leading the Cougars to a tournament win to begin the Spring season.
McElroy shot a four-under 212 at the Cougars’ own Fujikura Invitational at the Shadowridge Country Club in Vista, Calif. He finished second, tying teammate Greg Mouser, in the individual standings. Dominican’s Christian Schrodt was three strokes better at 7-under.
After a rough front nine, McElroy closed out the tournament with an even-par on the back nine to card a 74 in the final round. He had scored a two-under 70 in round one before a four-under 68 in round two on Monday.
The freshman from Sacramento appeared just once during the Fall season, playing as an individual at the Otter Invitational October 18-19.
McElroy’s efforts were instrumental in CSUSM’s tournament victory. The Cougars tallied an even par 864 team score to win by five strokes over second place Colorado State-Pueblo.
Cal State San Marcos is back in action next week at the Bay Area Invitational, hosted by Cal State East Bay, Feb. 21-22 in Pleasanton.
