Dawnyel Lair led CSUDH to upset win and 10-0 start to earn Women’s Basketball Player of the Week nod

CSUDH’s Dawnyel Lair has been awarded the CCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Award, for the week of Dec. 12-19, after a pair of consistent games while leading the Toros to a win over a ranked team.

Lair shot 78 percent from the floor (14-for-18) and led the Toros to an upset win over No. 14 Alaska Anchorage. Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to a program record 10-0 with a pair of wins over two GNAC teams.

The senior guard averaged 16 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 4.0 steals in two games. Lair, who is from Los Angeles, shot 78 percent for the week. She made 82 percent of her shots (9 for 11) on Friday for 18 points with six rebounds against Western Oregon. Two nights later she missed a triple-double by a rebound with 14 points (5-for-7, 71 percent), 10 assists and nine boards to lead CSUDH over Alaska Anchorage.

It was Cal State Dominguez Hill’s first win over a top 25 team since 2016.

Lair leads the CCAA with a .676 shooting percentage for the season. She has made 73.1 percent of her attempts during three CCAA contests.

After the mandatory break, Cal State Dominguez Hills hosts Cal State East Bay on Dec. 30 before traveling to Hayward for a re-match on New Year’s Day.
