Chico State’s Jojo Murphy has earned this week’s CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor after a pair of 30-point games.
Murphy scored 32 and 30 points to average 31.0 points per game to lead the Wildcats to a split on the road against formidable opponents Cal Poly Humboldt and Sonoma State. The true freshman shot 55 percent from the field (22 for 40), made 8 of 18 three-pointers and converted on 10 of 12 free throws to put up the huge numbers. He also had five rebounds and eight assists in two games.
In the Wildcats’ thrilling overtime win at Cal Poly Humboldt, Murphy netted a career-high 32 points in 41 minutes of play. Two days later at Sonoma State, the guard from Oakland added 30 points (11 of 18 shooting for 61 percent) to help Chico State’s cause.
Murphy has now scored 30-plus points in three straight games after he scored 30 on Dec. 13 versus Cal State San Marcos. He leads the CCAA in scoring at 25.6 points per conference game. Out of nine 30-point performances in the CCAA this season, Murphy recorded three of those games.
Chico State hosts a non-conference game on Sunday, Dec. 18 against Pacific Union but will not play in another contest until New Year’s Day at Stanislaus State.
