CCAA Player of the Year Daisy Duke registered a career-high 25 kills to lead No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona to a 25-20, 25-21, 24-26, and 25-23 win over No. 6 Stanislaus State in the opening game of the 2022 CCAA Volleyball Tournament. (Nov. 10)

The Broncos opened the match with nearly flawless execution in the first set as they hit .333 with just three errors and 16 kills. Duke paced the way with 10 kills and no errors in 13 attempts (.769 hitting%).

The Broncos carried that momentum through until late in the second set when the Warriors started to find their rhythm. Cal Poly Pomona earned the 25-21 in set two, but nothing would be easy going forward.

The third set featured eight ties and seven lead changes as the score swung back and forth late in the set. CPP was ahead 20-15 before STAN rattled off six of the following seven points to tie the match at 21-21. The Broncos reached game-point first at 24-23 as Duke added another kill on an assist from Caitie Mueller. The Warriors responded with a point from Alex Byrd and back-to-back kills by Macky Morris to win the set 26-24.

Cal Poly Pomona regained its offensive aggressiveness in the fourth as it hit .254 with 17 kills and just two errors. However, the Warriors matched CPP almost swing for swing as they had 15 kills and only three errors. A kill by Autumn Kirby brought the Warriors to within one at 21-20, but the Broncos had the answer this time. Duke, Samantha Campion, and Kaitlan Tucker recorded three consecutive kills to put CPP on the edge of victory at 24-20. The Pioneers attempted another comeback as they cut the lead to one (24-23), but another kill by Tucker sealed the victory for the Broncos.

The win gave Cal Poly Pomona CCAA Tournament wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

Duke finished with 25 kills and a .407 hitting percentage. She had just one error and added two service aces and four block assists. Libero Avery Percival added a career-best 30 digs, which are the most for any CCAA student-athlete in a four-set match this season. Caitie Mueller added 42 kills, four aces and just missed a double-double with nine digs.

Macky Morris had 12 kills and just one error to lead Stanislaus State. She was one of five Warriors with seven or more kills. Autumn Kirby posted her nine kills without an error to hit .600 in the match.

Cal Poly Pomona will advance to the semifinals of the CCAA Volleyball Tournament. The Seawolves will face the No. 2 seed and defending tournament champions Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m.
