For her outstanding efforts on the pitch, Cal State LA’s Thaiz Hernandez was voted the Pixellot/CCAA Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 27-Oct. 2).

Hernandez helped spearhead a defensive effort that saw the Golden Eagles allow just one goal in two matches to come away from the Humboldt-Chico road trip with a 1-0-1 record. Cal State LA gave up a total of eight shots, four on goal all weekend. She played all 90 minutes in both contests.

The sophomore from Hemet (San Jacinto HS) scored the game-tying goal on a shot from 30 yards out in a 1-1 tie at Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday.

Hernandez and the defense then limited No. 16 Chico State to just three shots in a 1-0 win on Sunday. It was Chico State’s first home loss since 2019 and was Cal State LA's first win in Chico since 2012.

After allowing 1.21 goals per game last year, Cal State LA now allows just 0.60 goals per game. The Golden Eagles rank second in the CCAA and 27th in the country in goals against average.

Hernandez is the second Golden Eagle to earn CCAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. She joins teammate Areli Reyes who picked up the honor for the week of Aug. 25-28. Click here to see the complete list
