CSUSB's Mickens earns Men's Basketball Player of the Week Award

Darius Mickens led a red-hot Cal State San Bernardino team to two road victories last weekend as he has been named the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for Jan. 10-17.

Mickens averaged a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds per game during the trip to Northern California to lead No. 6-ranked CSUSB to wins over Sonoma State and Humboldt State.

The junior guard from Willis, Texas, shot 71 percent from the field in two games, going 15-for-21 from the floor. He also made 3 of 5 three-pointers and converted on 7 of 8 free throw attempts.

Thursday at Humboldt State, Mickens put-up 22 points by missing just two shots on 11 attempts (82 percent). He also grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Two nights later, at Sonoma State, Mickens netted 18 points with eight rebounds and six assists before fouling out after 30 minutes of play. He shot 60 percent against the Seawolves. 

Mickens leads the CCAA in field goal percentage at 65.2. He has shot 60 percent or better in a game nine times in 14 games this season.

Cal State San Bernardino, winner of seven straight games, improved to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in the CCAA. The Yotes’ next contest is against CCAA-leader Cal State San Marcos Saturday afternoon in San Bernardino.
