In his first NCAA race, Medhane Woldu paced the Stanislaus State Warriors to a strong finish at the USF Invitational as the junior transfer was named CCAA Runner of the Week for Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

Woldu clocked 24:47.3 in the 8K race to finish fifth overall, behind only two Stanford runners, a St. Mary's College athlete and a harrier from host USF. The junior from San Diego led the Stan State team to an impressive fourth place finish in the team standings.

Only Stanford, Cal and St. Mary's finished ahead of the Warrior men in the 13-team, 116-athlete field at San Francisco's Golden Gate Park.

For the transfer from San Diego Mesa, his average mile time was just under five minutes at 4:59.3. Woldu's teammates Jose Garcia and Andrew Vazquez came in 10th and 11th, respectively, to help pace the team.

The Warriors entered the season ranked No. 16 in the nation and No. 2 in the West Region.

Stanislaus State will compete again next weekend, at home, at the annual Kim Duyst Invitational, Sept. 11, at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres.
