CSUSM's Vavra awarded Runner of the Week honor

Shea Vavra of Cal State San Marcos has been named CCAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, for the week of Sept. 20-26, after winning the Cougar Challenge.

Vavra paced the host team on Saturday in the meet doubling as a preview to the CCAA Championships, scheduled for Oct. 23. The senior from Escondido won the 8,000-meter race in 24:32.4.

Cal State San Marcos finished third in the team standings, behind only Pomona Pitzer and No. 4 ranked Chico State.

Vavra became the first CSUSM runner to win the Cougar Challenge since 2017.

Vavra has led the Cougars in each of the team’s three races thus far. He had also been considered for the runner of the week award twice.

CSUSM will compete again on Oct. 9 when the Cougars travel to Romeoville, Illinois for the Lewis Crossover.
