Brayden McLaughlin led Chico State men to a season-opening victory, as the freshman earned CCAA Runner of the Week honors, for the week of Sept. 6-12.
McLaughlin ran like a seasoned veteran in his collegiate debut, finishing second overall at the San Francisco State Invitational Friday afternoon in Golden Gate Park’s Speedway Meadows. McLaughlin blazed through the eight-kilometer course in 24:37.9, finishing behind only Simon Fraser’s Aaron Ahl.
McLaughlin’s effort helped spearhead fourth-ranked Chico State’s dominant victory Friday. The Wildcats outran runner-up Simon Fraser 24-49, and no other team in the field of 11 broke 100.
The Del Oro High School (Loomis) product joined the Wildcats in the fall of 2019 and redshirted that season, before missing the track and field campaign due to COVID-19 cancellations.
Chico State, which is ranked No. 1 in the West Region and the coaches’ favorite to win their 19th consecutive CCAA title, will be back in action on Sept. 25 at the Cougar Challenge, hosted by Cal State San Marcos.
