First-place votes in parenthesis |
Cal State San Bernardino has unanimously been selected by the conference coaches to repeat as the CCAA champions after earning 121 points and 11 first-place votes in the preseason poll.
The Yotes posted a perfect 33-0 record in 2019 en route to winning the first NCAA Championship in school history. Cal State San Bernardino was only the third team in the history of NCAA Division II to go undefeated in a season and they will bring a 22-match CCAA winning streak into conference play.
Cal State LA finished second in the preseason poll with 111 points. The Golden Eagles also picked up the only other first-place vote (teams are unable to vote for themselves in the preseason poll). Cal State LA was nationally ranked throughout 2019 and finished the season at 20-9. The Golden Eagles were also one of only two teams to push CSUSB to a fifth set.
Cal State San Marcos finished third in the poll with 80 points. The Cougars placed just ahead of Sonoma State and San Francisco State, who tied for fourth with 78 points. All three teams earned spots in the CCAA Tournament, and both Sonoma State and Cal State San Marcos picked up first-round wins.
Stanislaus State won the CCAA North Division in its final year of existence with an 11-7 record in league play. The Warriors dominated at home that season, going 10-2, to capture the title in the north. This year they are picked to finish sixth with 76 points. New in 2021, all 12 teams will play an 18-match conference slate that is randomly generated, rather than competing in North/South divisions. Cal Poly Pomona is expected to place three spots ahead of its 2019 finish as the Broncos came in seventh with 70 points.
Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State each received 49 points in the voting to finish tied for eighth in the poll. CSUDH went 7-10 while playing in the south division while Chico posted a 9-9 record in the north division. Cal State East Bay (33 points), Cal State Monterey Bay (26), and Humboldt State (21) rounded out the 2021 CCAA coaches' preseason poll.
The 2021 season will begin on Saturday, Aug. 28 when Humboldt State travels to Fresno for a pair of matches. Many other CCAA teams will open play the weekend of Sept. 2-5 at tournaments throughout the state. Preseason favorites, Cal State San Bernardino, will open play on Thursday, Sept. 2 in a neutral site contest in San Diego against Regis University. These teams last met in the semifinals match of the 2019 NCAA Championships.
