#5 Cal State LA upends CCAA counterpart #4 Cal Poly Pomona in first round

?SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Cal State LA defeated Cal Poly Pomona in the first round of the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino, to earn a semifinal spot.
 
Alejandra Negron and Karla Santos led the way for the Golden Eagles as they combined for 43 kills and hit .316. Negron led the way with 23 kills and a .340 hitting percentage. Santos had a double-double of her own with 18 digs to go along with 20 kills and two aces. She also chipped in with 15 digs for the double-double. Setter, Eliza Cannon, had 48 assists in addition to 11 digs and four kills. Victoria Duarte posted eight blocks, and Emily Elliott added 12 kills.
 
Jazmin Parrish and Daisy Duke each had 16 kills for Cal Poly Pomona. Kira Zimmerman had 45 assists, and Brynn Sherbery registered 23 digs. The Broncos were held to a .171 hitting percentage while the Golden Eagles hit .258.
 
Cal State LA got out to the 2-0 lead by outhitting Cal Poly Pomona in each set. The first set could have gone either way with it tied 22-22, but the Golden Eagles scored three of the final four points, which included kills by Negron and Santos, to finish with the 25-23 win. The second set was never in much doubt as Cal State LA started on an 8-3 run, and Cal Poly Pomona never got closer than four points.
 
Cal Poly Pomona would not go away without a fight. The Broncos rallied from a 24-20 deficit to push the set to extra points. Again they found themselves trailing late, but they scored the final three points of the set to win 29-27. The fourth set was back and forth early before Cal State LA broke a 6-6 tie with an 11-6 run, and it would never relinquish the lead en route to victory.
 
Cal State LA will face the No. 1 seed, Cal State San Bernardino, in the semifinals on Friday, Dec. 3.
