?SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - For the 20th consecutive season, Cal State San Bernardino won its opening playoff round match to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional. This happened again on Thursday night as the No. 1 seeded Yotes defeated No. 8 Alaska Anchorage in four sets (25-23, 25-27, 25-11, and 25-17).
Alexis Cardoza had an impressive 26 kills. She made just seven errors in 57 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. The senior added four assists, five digs, and an ace. Jalyn Hayes didn't match Cardoza's total, but she was even more efficient. The junior middle blocker had nine kills in just 12 attempts, all without an error for an incredible .750 hitting percentage. She added a match-best eight blocks. Melissa Garciglia chipped in with 13 assists, and Marlee Nunley had 50 assists in the four sets. Eve Stephens led Alaska Anchorage with 16 kills. She was the only Seawolves' student-athlete in double-figures.
The first two sets could have gone either direction. The teams split the sets, with Cal State San Bernardino winning the first 25-23 and Alaska Anchorage taking the second 27-25. From there the Yotes turned up the intensity and dominated the next two sets.
Cal State San Bernardino held Alaska Anchorage to a .000 hitting percentage in the third with just seven kills to go along with seven errors. Meanwhile, the Yotes had 14 kills and hit .289 to take the 2-1 lead. In the fourth, the teams exchanged points early before Cal State San Bernardino closed scored 17 of the final 24 points to win the match.
The victory moves CSUSB to the semifinals of the NCAA West Regional. The Yotes will face Cal State LA at 7:30 p.m.
