For the second time in three days, David Elizaga made the game-winning play and keeper Alvaro Unanua came through with a number of clutch saves to lift Cal State LA to the 1-0 win, and its second consecutive NCAA Super Region 4 Championship. (Dec. 4)
This was the fourth meeting of the season between the team, and it showed as neither could break through the other's defense for the first 66 minutes. The Golden Eagles finally broke the scoreless run in the 67th minute when Carl Solli tipped the ball out to Jose Orellana, sprinting along the sideline. He took the ball nearly to the Broncos' end line before sending a cross to the middle of the 18-yard box. The ball traveled just beyond the stretched leg of a Broncos' defender and found Elizaga's foot. He collected and sent the ball into the net for what would prove to be the game-winner.
Cal Poly Pomona had a few good looks on goal to take the lead before Cal State LA broke the tie, but Unanua came up with the stop each time. He made the standout play of the night early in the second half when the Broncos' Paul Henschke got free in space for a 1v1 with the keeper. When he took the shot, Unanua was just five feet away, and he got an arm on the ball to deflect it away. Unanua quickly closed the distance and prevented Henschke from getting a dangerous angle.
The Golden Eagles will advance to the final four of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship next week in Colorado Springs. Their opponent will be determined on Sunday, Dec. 5. The Golden Eagles' will play their first match in Colorado Springs on Thursday, Dec. 9.
