Box score
Cal State LA is heading to the Super Regional Championship for the second straight season after coming through with a 2-1 overtime victory over the No. 4 seed, Colorado Mesa. (Dec. 2)
The Mavericks played with great energy throughout the first half and took the lead in the 43rd minute on Daisuke Takanaka's goal, where he beat a couple of defenders in open space. That lead would be short-lived as a foul was called inside the box on a corner kick, giving Cal State LA the penalty kick. Gonzalo Talavera converted on the shot to tie the match at 1-1.
The score would remain tied through regulation thanks to some excellent goalkeeping by Alvaro Unanua, who had six of his 11 saves in the second half.
Three minutes into the overtime period, a David Elizaga steal along the sideline would key the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles. With his man trying to make an inside move, Elizaga poked the ball away and quickly headed towards the goal. As the Mavericks' defense scrambled to get back into place, Elizaga sent a low pass to the middle of the field, where Carl Solli made a heel pass to Gerard Hernando in space. Hernando took one touch to his right and fired a shot past the keeper's reach for the game-winner.
Cal State LA will play Cal Poly Pomona for the Super Region championship on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. This will be the fourth meeting of the season between the teams. The Golden Eagles currently lead the season series 2-1.
