Zafir Williams, a forward at Cal State East Bay, has been selected as the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, for the week of Nov. 15-21 after posting career numbers last week.
In three games, Williams averaged 23 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in leading the Pioneers to a 2-1 week. CSUEB’s only loss was a heartbreaking overtime defeat against Alaska Fairbanks at Sonoma State’s Ron Logsdon Basketball Challenge.
During the tournament, Williams scored 29 points on 57 percent shooting against Western Oregon and dropped 32 points by shooting 61 percent from the field with 11 rebounds versus UAF.
Against WOU, the standout from Long Beach, also pulled eight rebounds with two blocked shots. He was 13 of 23 shooting with three three-pointers. On Saturday, Williams made 11 of 18 shots with four three-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the foul line. He again had two blocked shots with a steal and an assist.
On Wednesday against Dominican, the 2019-20 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, scored eight points with four rebounds plus a block and two steals.
Cal State East Bay, now 2-3, hosts Saint Martin’s on Wednesday before opening conference play on Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
