Eduardo Faria and Oscar Griehsel Facey each scored twice, and Paul Henschke added another as the No. 7 seed, Cal Poly Pomona, rolled to a 5-0 win over No. 10 Biola in the first round of the NCAA Super Region 4 tournament. (Nov. 19)
First team All-CCAA selection Eduardo Faria had the first two goals of the match within 48 seconds of each other. He put the Broncos in the lead in the 20th minute after Garrett Jensen and Melvyn Perez worked to give him space in the box. Faria received the pass and faked out his defender before shooting low and hard into the net. He added another on a penalty kick in the 21st minute following his teammate being dragged down in the box.
The score remained 2-0 through the rest of the half, but the Broncos' offense was just getting started. Griehsel Facey extended the lead to 3-0 in the 48th minute before Cal Poly Pomona's leading scorer, Paul Henschke, put up a goal of his own in the 50th minute an assist from the goalkeeper Jordan Aldama and Griehsel Facey. It was the CCAA Newcomer of the Year's 13th goal of the season. Griehsel Facey notched another one in the 76th minute to record his second multi-goal match of the season.
"The energy from our team and our bench was incredible today," said Cal Poly Pomona's head coach Matt O'Sullivan.
Aldama had as many saves as he had assists in the match. The senior had just one stop as he recorded his eighth shutout of the season.
"We were excellent defensively today," added coach O'Sullivan. "BIola really struggled to establish. We were aggressive and in their space all match. It was really exciting."
Cal Poly Pomona (13-4-3) will now advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Super Region 4. They will face the No. 2 seed, Midwestern State, on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. PST
