The No. 3 seed, San Francisco State, made program history tonight as it won its first-round match over the No. 6 seed, Cal State San Marcos, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, and 25-18, in the CCAA Volleyball Tournament. The victory was the first CCAA Tournament win in Gator history. (Nov. 18)
The win moved their season record to 22-4. With the loss, Cal State San Marcos concluded its season at 12-13.
Izzy Issak, Trinity Barr, and Jessica Haynie powered San Francisco State's offensive attack. Issak posted a season-best 20 kills to lead all student-athletes. The sophomore outside hitter had just three errors in the match as she led all players who had at least 10 swings, with a .415 hitting percentage.
Issak and SFSU also received help from first team All-CCAA selection, Jessica Haynie, who added 15 kills, and Trinity Barr, who chipped in with 13. Kimberly DeBoer and Payton Jensen combined to post 55 assists in just the four sets. Brianna DeBoer registered a match-best 28 digs, as three Gators posted 20 or more digs.
Cal State San Marcos' Kassy Doering closed out her career with 18 kills and just two errors. The 2021 All-CCAA selection hit .364 after sliding from her traditional middle blocker spot to an outside hitter position for the match. Kelsey Rasmussen added 16 kills, and Madison Turner dished out a match-high 45 assists.
Cal State San Marcos looked like it might have a chance to pull the upset when it began the match by scoring nine of the first 12 points. SFSU battled back to take the first set 25-20, but Cal State San Marcos seemed undeterred. The Cougars hit .359 in the second set to win 25-21 to even the match at 1-1.
The Gators' defense then stepped up to seal the victory. SFSU nearly doubled CSUSM's hitting percentage as they limited the Cougars to a .133 hitting percentage in the third set. That trend continued into the fourth set, where the team that won the hitting percentage battle won the set. SFSU posted a.286 hitting percentage in the fourth to seal the victory.
San Francisco State will advance to the semifinals of the 2021 CCAA Volleyball Tournament, where they will face the No. 2 seed, Cal Poly Pomona, on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.
