POMONA, Calif. - Cal State East Bay is headed to the CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament title match for the first time in program history. Tami Kwong's golden goal broke a scoreless tie in double overtime to help lead the No. 3 seeded Pioneers to a 1-0 upset over No. 2 Chico State. (Nov. 12)
Both teams had looks in regulation, but both goalies played their position well. It was not until a great set of individual efforts in the final seconds that the Pioneers were finally able to breakthrough.
The play began with Kelsey Pena making a steal on a goal kick by Chico State. She rushed the ball forward up the right side and sent a cross to the middle of the field. A Chico defender was the first to make contact, but she could not clear it, and the ball bounced to Kwong. She took one touch to her right before striking a low, hard shot into the net for the game-winner.
That was the only flaw on Chico State goalkeeper Emma Hofmann's record as the recently named CCAA Freshman of the Year made a season-high 10 saves. Cal State East Bay's Jordan Smith made three saves en route to earning her 10th shutout of the season.
Cal State East Bay (10-5-4) will now advance to the 2021 CCAA Women's Soccer Tournament finals. The Pioneers will face No. 1 seed Sonoma State for the Tournament Championship on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
