Niles named Runner of the Week after leading SF State to win

Jacob Niles of San Francisco State has earned the weekly award as the CCAA Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, for the week of Sept. 27-Oct. 3, after leading the Gators at the Pacific Collegiate Invitational.

Niles finished third in a time of 26:07.1 in the 8K race as the top Division II runner, behind only Santa Clara’s Kyle Johnson and St. Mary’s Muhammed Ahmed.

The senior from Aptos led the Gators to a team victory at the event, hosted by the University of the Pacific at Micke Grove Golf Club in Lodi. The 5:30 p.m. race started under tough conditions in 88-degree heat.

SF State finished tied for first in the standings with St. Mary’s with 44 points. However, the Gators won the tiebreaker with better head-to-head results from the top five runners.

Next week SF State will take its longest trip of the season when the Gators travel to Bellingham, Washington to race in the WWU Classic on October 9.
