In a very tight battle for the top spot, Chico State edged out Cal State San Bernardino to be the favorites in the 2021-22 CCAA preseason coaches' poll. (Oct. 26)

Chico State received seven first-place votes and 139 points overall to be selected as league favorites heading into the 2021-22 season. The Wildcats and head coach Greg Clink will boast an experienced roster with the return of 2019-20 All-CCAA selections Malik Duffy (12.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, .533 fg%) and Isaiah Brooks (10.7 ppg, 3.8 apg) along with second-leading scorer Kevin Warren (12.2 ppg, 1.57 spg).

Cal State San Bernardino earned 134 points and four first-place votes to place second in the preseason poll. First team All-CCAA forward Daytone Jennings (14.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg) is back to lead a Yotes' roster that paced the nation in rebounding margin in 2021-22 (plus-10.6) and includes 17 upperclassmen.

It was not just the top spot in the poll that was highly contested as three teams finished within five points of third place.

Cal Poly Pomona claimed the third spot in the preseason poll with 106 and the last remaining first-place vote. Cal State East Bay was right behind in fourth with 103 points, followed by Cal State Dominguez Hills in fifth with 101 points.

The Broncos were set to appear in the NCAA West Regional for the third straight year when COVID struck in 2019-20. They will return five student-athletes from that team including All-CCAA guard BJ Standley (10.6 ppg, .448 3fg%).

Cal State East Bay will bring back the conference's top returning scorer and 2019-20 CCAA Newcomer of the Year Zafir Williams (17.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg, .490 fg%) and more to a team that reached the CCAA semifinals in 20219-20.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is expected to rely on its experience in the backcourt where the Toros return two of its top three scorers in Colten Kresl (16.4 ppg, 4.1 apg) and Alex Garcia (10.8 ppg). Kresl was also an all-conference selection in 2019-20.

Coming in next in the poll was Cal State LA in sixth (74 points) and Cal State San Marcos in seventh (63 points). Stanislaus State and Cal State Monterey Bay each collected 55 points to tie for eighth. The poll was rounded out by Humboldt State (45), San Francisco State (35), and Sonoma State (25).
