An incredible individual performance by Cal State San Marcos’ Matthew Pennington has earned the sophomore this week’s CCAA Men’s Golfer of the Week award.

Pennington shot a tournament-low 5-under 67 in the final round of the Otter Fall Invitational on Tuesday to win medalist honors in the tournament hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Cougar from Carlsbad is the only player to shoot under-par for the 54-hole event at the Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside. Pennington totaled 3-under 213 to win by four strokes over Chico State’s Christopher Colla.

Pennington, who had eight birdies, was one of three players to shoot 5-under on Tuesday. The win is Pennington’s first collegiate tournament victory.

Cal State San Marcos finished seventh with Cal State San Bernardino taking the tournament title.

The Cougars completed their fall season and will resume play in February.
