Running against Division I athletes, Cal State Monterey Bay’s Natalie Harper led the Otters as the freshman was named the Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week, for the final regular season week of Oct. 11-17.
Harper and the Otters competed in the invitational division of the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, which included 15 Division I programs. Harper, who is from Elk Grove, clocked a personal best 22:26.1 to finish 68th among 143 runners.
Harper was the top Division II runner and the fourth non-Division I collegiate runner to cross the finish line.
As a team, CSUMB was 14th with University of San Francisco in first. The Dons were led by winner Ruby Smee (19:30.3).
For Harper, it was just her third collegiate race of her career. She beat her previous best time of 23:37.8, set three weeks ago at the Cougar Challenge, on the campus of Cal State San Marcos — the site of the 2021 CCAA Cross Country Championships.
The CCAA Championships are slated for Saturday at CSUSM. The women’s 6K run is at 9 a.m. Live broadcast of the championships is available on the CCAANetwork at CCAANetwork.com.
