With a pair of qualifying marks at their home meets, Stanislaus State’s Cynthia Meija and Gabby Eshiet of UC San Diego have been tapped as CCAA Track & Field Athlete of the Week for March 2-8, respectively.

Meija, a junior from Tulare, led a pack of Warriors in the 10,000 meters where she paced the speedy field at the Kim Duyst Invitational. Crossing the line in 35:37.34, Meija is now the Stanislaus State school record holder at the 10K distance, and also an NCAA provisional qualifier. In fact, the first six Warrior finishers all broke the previous school record and seven are now among the Stanislaus State top 10 after blazing around the track at Al Brenda Track at Warrior Stadium.

Eshiet, a senior thrower from Chico, earned her provisional qualifying mark in the hammer throw, taking first at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge with a toss of 172’9” (52.66 meters). Eshiet’s throw beat out the field of 16, outpacing her nearest competitor by five feet to claim third on the UC San Diego all-time performance lists, right behind her personal best set at last year’s CCAA Track & Field Championships. Also placing fourth in the shot put, Eshiet helped guide the Tritons to a third-place finish in the team standings as UC San Diego compiled 108.5 points.

The Tritons are slated to compete at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Scoring Meet at Point Loma this weekend, while the Warriors will take the weekend off to prepare for the Hornet Invitational March 20-21.
