Sheiring, Scates Secure CCAA Softball Accolades

After a pair of series victories for their respective teams, Humboldt State’s Lexee Sheiring and Nalani Scates of Sonoma State have earned CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Week for March 2-8.
Sheiring, a two-way player for Humboldt State, had a successful weekend at the plate as the Jacks took three-of-four on the road at Cal State East Bay. The junior from Lincoln closed the weekend hitting .545 with six hits, four runs and seven RBI, with a 1.182 slugging percentage after drilling three extra-base hits. In Humboldt State’s 16-0 win in the second game of the series, Shiering powered a two-run home run to left center and also picked up the victory from the circle.
In Saturday’s opener, she hit a grand slam in the fifth inning as Humboldt State scored 10 in the frame to halt the game at 17-1 after five innings. Sheiring also pitched the full game, earning the victorious effort. In the series finale, she drove in the game-winner in a 9-8 nine-inning victory to cap the impressive week with her first career Player of the Week nod.
Scates, a senior transfer from Missouri, recorded two starts on the weekend as the Seawolves faced off against Cal State Monterey Bay. In her 13 innings pitches, Scates struck out 12 - six looking - and walked just one batter, allowing the Otters to hit a meager .047 with two total hits and one run.
The Pleasanton native pitched six scoreless innings in Friday’s opener, combining for the 1-0 shutout as teammate Raquel Chaidez got the win. Saturday, Scates was again in the circle twirling a complete game as Sonoma State was victorious, 4-1.
Next for the Seawolves is a date with the nation’s No. 4 team, traveling to Chico State for four. Meanwhile, the Jacks host Stanislaus State. The rain-altered series in Arcata is now scheduled for Thursday-Friday doubleheaders.
