After a pair of provisional marks on the books, Ryan Fields of Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego’s Evan Shimasaki have claimed CCAA Track & Field Athlete of the Week for March 2-8, respectively.
For the second time in the young 2020 season, Fields has been tapped as CCAA Track Athlete of the Week, racing to a provisional mark in the 400 meters Saturday at the Beach Opener. The sophomore from Los Angeles took first in the event with a time of 52.82 seconds which currently leads the country. Fields was also a member of the 4x400 meter relay team, where the Broncos crossed the line in 3;14.56 to take first, cruising by Division I Long Beach State and UC Irvine by nearly three seconds.
In the field, UC San Diego junior Evan Shimasaki soared to a personal best in the pole vault at the San Diego Collegiate Challenge. His leap of 16”6.75” (5.05 meters) was good for first in the field of eight competitors, and stands as a provisional qualifying mark. The Seattle native tied the Tritons’ all-time pole vaulting record while helping the team to a second-place finish, trailing Navy by three points and outpacing UC Santa Barbara by 15.
The Broncos head to Cal State Fullerton’s Ben Brown Invitational and the Occidental Spring Break Classic this week, while the Tritons are slated to compete at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Scoring Meet at Point Loma.
