Helping Sonoma State to wire-to-wire team and individual titles, sophomore Samantha Cabunag has earned CCAA Golfer of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Cabunag, who came to the Seawolves after a season at DI Southern Illinois, fired an opening-round 71 to secure the early lead at the PLNU Sea Lion Invitational at Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. She followed that up with a Day 2 75 to maintain the lead over the field, holding off teammate Cristina Picariello by one stroke. The individual title is Cabunag’s first as a collegiate golfer.
The Irvine native led the Seawolves to the team title as well, as Sonoma State put together the two lowest team scores in the two-day event. The Seawolves finished 10 strokes ahead of its closest competitor, Dixie State, with third going to upstart Cal State LA.
After a three-week break in the action, Sonoma State next takes to the course at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay at Corica Park in Alameda, March 2-3.
