After impressing on opening weekend, Chico State pitcher Brooke Larson and UC San Diego outfielder Keila Bosinger earned the first CCAA Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week awards for 2020.
Both the Wildcats and Tritons went undefeated in their respective tournaments to open the year at 5-0, with Larson earning Most Valuable Player at the Concordia Kickoff Classic in Irvine.
Larsen was dominant in the pitcher’s circle for No. 20 Chico State during her time on the field in Irvine en route to being honored as top player in the field. The junior from Sacramento posted three complete game victories - two via shutout - while allowing just two runs and 10 hits while striking out 27 batters in 21 innings of work.
She went the distance and picked up the win Friday in Chico State’s season-opening 3-2 victory over Azusa Pacific, then was nearly unhittable Saturday against No. 10 Concordia-Irvine, shutting out the Eagles on just two hits and tying her career high with 13 strikeouts in a 4-0 Wildcats win. Sunday Larsen twirled her second straight shutout and fanned nine in Chico State’s 7-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific.
For Bosinger, a sophomore from Chula Vista, the bats were on fire at the Desert Stinger Tournament in Las Vegas, as she helped CCAA preseason favorite No. 6 UC San Diego get off to a 5-0 start. She batted .471 in her 17 at-bats, recording 11 RBI on eight hits that included three home runs and a double as she earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Among the highlights for Bosinger was a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to secure a victory over Oklahoma Baptist in Saturday’s opening contest. Overall, she tallied 18 total bases and produced a slugging percentage of 1.059, as well as an on-base percentage of .471. In addition, Bosinger garnered three runs, a stolen base and was perfect in the field to help guide the Tritons to a second place finish out of 21 teams in the overall standings. Also undefeated on the weekend, UT-Tyler got the nod as tournament winners based on run differential.
UC San Diego takes on Hawai’i Pacific in a non-conference tuneup before CCAA play opens, with the Tritons hosting the Sharks today in a doubleheader that begins at noon. A home-opening series against Cal State Monterey Bay is on the docket for Chico State, as the Wildcats and Otters play two apiece on Friday and Saturday. First pitch from the series is set for noon.
