Chico State senior Nicholas Caputo played to his best collegiate finish to capture a runner-up team and individual finish while claiming CCAA Golfer of the Week for Feb. 19-25.
The Holister native sat in a tie for 39th after firing a first-round 76 Monday morning at the Bay Area Invitational, hosted by Holy Names at The Club at Ruby Hill in Pleasanton. The afternoon session saw Caputo bounce back with a 71 to land in a tie for 23rd heading into the final round. To close the tournament, Caputo posted the best round of the day on Tuesday firing a five-under 67 to catapult up the leaderboard to finish in second place compiling a 2-under 214.
Caputo started his round with back-to-back birdies and tacked on four more over the next 12 holes to get to 6-under par before his first and only bogey of the day. He finished with three pars in a row for a 67, made all the more impressive by the fact that only one other player in the field broke 70 (with a 69) and only five—those two included—came in at par or better.
Caputo’s round was key for the runner-up Wildcats, who finished three shots behind Cal State East Bay in the race for the team title, and held off 24th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay for second as the CCAA went 1-2-3 in the 15-team event.
After two weeks away from competition, Caputo and the Wildcats will head back to the Bay Area March 16–17 for the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, hosted by Cal State East Bay. Chico State will join seven of the league’s nine teams on the course of Corica Park Golf Club in Alameda.
