After posting a career-best on the road, Cal State San Marcos junior Akayla Hackson has nabbed CCAA Player of the Week for Feb. 17-23, her second career weekly honor.
Hailing from Sunnyvale, Hackson averaged 24.5 points on 59 percent shooting from the field and a 10-of-11 week at the line to help the Cougars keep pace in their chase for the CCAA regular-season title.
She opened the road trip with an 18-point effort at Cal State Monterey Bay before going off for a career-high 31 at Cal State East Bay. Against the Pioneers, Hackson was 10-of-31 from the field with a perfect 9-for-9 effort at the charity stripe in the 85-69 victory in Hayward. Hackson helped the team to a banner night at the line as Cal State San Marcos connected on 25-of-28 tries coupled with 40 points in the paint to claim the win. It was their sixth game of the season with more than 20 free throw makes, tying a season best. Hackson currently leads the league in free throw percentage, sinking 84.5 percent of her attempts from the line.
The regular-season championship, and top seed in the upcoming CCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament all hinges on the final day of the regular-season schedule. UC San Diego (22-4, 18-3 CCAA) travels to Cal State San Marcos (22-4, 17-4 CCAA) to determine who will hoist the banner. The two meet up Saturday at 1 p.m., and should the Cougars win they would take top line in the brackets by way of a tiebreaker advantage, tying with the Tritons for co-champion status.
