Wampler, Nguyen Fill Stat Sheet En Route to Weekly Acclaim

Chico State’s Alani Nguyen and Robyn Wampler of UC San Diego stuffed the stat sheet and helped their respective teams to series victories to claim CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 17-23, respectively.
Nguyen, a freshman for the Wildcats put up monster numbers against Humboldt State, helping fifth-ranked Chico State to a 3-1 series victory in Arcata. After dropping the first of the four-game set, the Wildcats outscored the Jacks 42-8 in 17 innings played to put away the final three contests. Nguyen was a catalyst to the offensive output, batting .545 in the series, with four-extra-base hits and two home runs to compile a 1.364 slugging percentage. She also reached base 11 times with six RBI in the series.
The Buena Park native was nearly unstoppable in Friday’s double-header, reaching base in all eight of her plate appearances, including a 3-for-3 appearance with a double, two homers and five RBI in the 15-2 nightcap.
Wampler, a junior from Berkeley, is earning her ninth career CCAA Pitcher of the Week award, and her first in 2020. No. 18 UC San Diego opened the week with a non-conference double-header sweep of Azusa Pacific before a 3-1 series victory against Stanislaus State. Wampler compiled three wins - two in complete game shutouts - in 23 innings pitched, allowing just two walks and no earned runs (two unearned) while striking out 17 for a 0.00 ERA. She held opponents to a .147 batting average, while also gathering eight assists from the circle.
The lefty was dominant in game one of the Azusa Pacific doubleheader, as she tossed 10.0 innings, earned six strikeouts and surrendered just four hits and one walk in the Triton triumph. Her other shutout on the week came in the first game against the Warriors, where she allowed just two hits before retiring the last 12 batters of the 5-0 decision.
UC San Diego hits the road this week, matching up with Cal State Monterey Bay. Meanwhile, Chico State returns home to host Can State East Bay. Both four-game series’ begin Friday as the Wildcats and Pioneers open up at noon, and the Tritons and Otters play under the lights in Seaside, with a 4 p.m. start.
