Cal State East Bay junior forward Zafir Williams posted two more double-doubles to add to his league-leading total during a road split in Los Angeles County, and came away with his second CCAA Player of the Week nod for Feb. 3-9.
A native of Long Beach and first-year transfer from Division I Loyola Marymount, Williams averaged 22.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per game, shooting 50 percent (15-30) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line. He hit four of nine three-point attempts.
Williams first produced game highs of 20 points and a season-high-tying 13 rebounds in a narrow 87-82 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday night, adding two assists, a steal, and a pair of blocked shots to also match his best single-game effort this year.
During a 75-73 triumph Saturday afternoon at Cal State LA, Williams shot 8-for-15 from the floor in leading all players with 24 points, and grabbed 11 boards and one steal over a season-high 38 minutes. Ten of his points came in the second half as the Pioneers rallied from 11 down.
In addition to pacing the CCAA with his 11 double-doubles, which rank second in the West Region and tied for 11th nationally in Division II, Williams is third in the conference in both scoring (18.1) and rebounding (8.3).
Williams becomes the third CCAA men’s basketball student-athlete this year to earn a second weekly distinction, joining guards Jeremy Smith of Cal State San Bernardino and Tyrell Roberts of UC San Diego. He was previously chosen on Dec. 17 for East Bay’s only other award.
Cal State East Bay moved from sixth place up to fifth with last week’s split, and at 13-10 overall and 9-8 in CCAA play, has one more road game on tap in the week ahead. The Pioneers await the second installment of their annual Battle of the Bays rivalry series with Cal State Monterey Bay, in Seaside Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The game can be watched on
the CCAA Network.
