Chico State outfielder Eddie Zavala and Cal State Monterey Bay right-hander Greg Steinbeck are the CCAA Player and Pitcher of the Week for the second week of non-conference play from Feb. 3-9.

Zavala hit .692 (9-13) with four runs, one double and seven RBI in leading his Wildcats to a three-game sweep over Fresno Pacific in Chico. The senior from Torrance slugged .769 with a .692 on-base percentage, striking out just once while batting .700 (7-10) with runners in scoring position. Zavala went 3-for-4 with the double, run scored and two RBI in a 14-7 victory in Friday’s home opener, adding an outfield assist at home plate. He followed that with a 5-for-6 effort to begin Saturday’s doubleheader, with three runs and four RBI in a 21-11 romp. Zavala wrapped up the weekend by providing a game-tying RBI single with two away in the sixth inning as Chico State took the seven-inning series finale in walk-off fashion in eight frames, 2-1.

Steinbeck put together a stellar outing in the Otters’ second win (4-3) of a three-game home sweep over 2019 West Region runner-up Azusa Pacific. The sixth-year senior out of Hollister allowed just a single run over 5.2 innings pitched, on five hits and zero walks while striking out three. Steinbeck faced one hitter over the minimum during the first five frames. He and his staff mates combined to give up only seven runs to the potent Cougar offense, outscoring them 27-7 for the weekend, with the exclamation point of a 20-2 rout in Saturday’s finale.

This is the second-straight week to start the season in which the CCAA Pitcher of the Week excelled against Azusa Pacific, ranked No. 12 by the NCBWA and No. 21 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Otters are rated No. 22 and No. 39 in those polls, respectively.

Chico State (4-2) entertains San Francisco State for four to open the 44-game league slate, while Cal State Monterey Bay (3-3), the 2019 CCAA regular-season and tournament runner-up, is at Cal State LA. Both sets of contests will run Friday through Sunday.
