After a weekend sweep and pair of 20-point games, Humboldt State’s Tyra Turner has been selected as CCAA Player of the Week for Jan. 19-26. This is her first weekly honor of the season, and third in her time as a Jack.
The senior guard from San Bernardino averaged 20.5 points, 7.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals in a pair of well-rounded victories to halt a three-game slide for the Jacks and move the squad back to an even .500 in the conference standings, vying for a position in the CCAA postseason brackets.
Turner recorded back-to-back 20-point games including scoring a season high 23 points and adding eight assists in Humboldt State's four-point win over Cal State East Bay win on Thursday. The 82-78 effort over the Pioneers earned the season split between the two. She completed the weekend with her second consecutive 20-point effort, scoring a game-high 20 with six assists as Humboldt State swept away Cal State Monterey Bay 81-56. Turner also added four rebounds and three steals in each game.
Turner is currently leading the CCAA in assists per game (5.2) and minutes per game (38.3) while landing in sixth in the conference in steals per game (1.8).
Next, Turner and the Jacks hit the road to take on the league-leading squads in Southern California. First, they lace up against UC San Diego Thursday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday at Cal State San Marcos.
