Coney Claims CCAA Runner of the Week
Helping UC San Diego to the team title at the Cougar Challenge, Madalyne Coney has earned CCAA Runner of the Week for Sept. 9-15.
The sophomore from Alamo paced her team with a second-place individual finish, closing in 21:12.40. Coney only trailed Hannah Wolkenhauer in the standings as the competitor from Queens (N.C.) posted a lifetime best as she raced to the win and USTFCCCA National Division II Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors. Coney was just four seconds back from the senior.
As a team, the Tritons compiled 49 points to edge out hosts and CCAA foes Cal State San Marcos by one point in the standings to earn the title in the seven-team race. The youthful UC San Diego squad had four underclassmen with scoring finishes, as a trio of freshman followed Coney to the finish coming in at 10th, 11th and 12th in the standings.
After an idle week, the Tritons travel to Sacramento to compete in the Capital Cross Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 28. Held at the site of the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, the field at Haggin Oaks is sure to be stacked with talent as top teams across the country get a look at the site of 2019’s final race.
