UC San Diego Captures 2018-19 Hiegert Cup
After yet another stellar year on the courses, fields and courts of competition, UC San Diego has earned the Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner’s Cup trophy for the eighth time, announced at the Conference’s annual spring Executive Council meetings.
The award, named in honor of former long-time Commissioner and CCAA Hall of Famer, Robert J. Hiegert, is given to the CCAA member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA’s 13 championship sports.
The Tritons hoisted the CCAA banner in five sports during the year accumulating 98.48 points, winning championships in women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball. Additionally, UC San Diego earned additional points for taking the tournament title in both women’s soccer and women’s basketball, with the soccer team advancing to the NCAA Division II National Semifinal in Pittsburgh.
Along with the five championships and two tournament titles, UC San Diego’s men’s cross country, men’s golf and men’s and women’s track & field each landed in the top four finishers in the league standings to earn points toward the Hiegert Cup.
“The Hiegert Cup represents the program that really top to bottom throughout the year shows excellence,” said CCAA commissioner Mitch Cox. “UC San Diego had a wonderful season on the soccer field, basketball court and baseball and softball diamonds, especially. We’re so proud to have them represent our conference as this year’s winner.”
"We are extremely excited and proud to win this year's Hiegert Cup," added UC San Diego Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards. "This is a testament to the skills, determination, and hard work of our scholar-athletes and coaches, as well as the overwhelming support from our staff, campus community, and the entire Triton family."
UC San Diego has never fallen below the top three in the Hiegert Cup standings since the award was implemented in the 2005-06, with victorious efforts in the first five academic years.
Cal Poly Pomona earned a second-place finish, collecting 88.85 points. The Broncos were propelled by team championships in men’s soccer and men’s basketball and runner-up results for volleyball and men’s track & field to highlight their tally.
Third place belongs to last year’s Hiegert Cup winner Chico State with 83.3 points, followed by San Francisco State’s fourth-place finish and 72.73 points. This marks the highest finish for the Gators in Cup history. Cal State San Marcos rounds out the top five with 70.95 points and made history on the national stage with their first-ever NCAA Division II individual national champion after Jaime Jacob went low at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships.
The next five schools in the standings are separated by less than one point. Cal State East Bay rates sixth with 62.675 points, followed by Cal State LA (62.36), Stanislaus State (62.27), Cal State Monterey Bay (62.2), Cal State San Bernardino (61.72). Sonoma State (59.05), Humboldt State (44.52) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (38.3) round out the 2018-19 Hiegert Cup standings.
An institution's Hiegert Cup ranking is calculated using its top two Conference finishes in the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons, as well as the next two highest finishes, regardless of season. The specific number points garnered per sport is determined by the number of institutions that sponsor the sport.
