SEASIDE, Calif – The CCAA individual award winners and All-CCAA squads have been announced as the 2019 CCAA Softball Tournament is slated to get underway Thursday from Otter Sports Complex on the campus of Cal State Monterey Bay.

The list of 33 honorees as voted on by the league’s 11 head coaches is headlined by Morgan Ratliff, selected as Most Valuable Player for the 2019 season. The senior outfielder from Santa Clara has been a consistent performer for Cal State San Bernardino all season, helping the Coyotes to their third-straight postseason appearance.

Ratliff ranks in the CCAA’s top 10 in a multitude of categories including batting average (.412 – 3rd), hits (62 – 2nd), on base percentage (.494 – 4th), runs per game (1.09 – 1st), stolen bases (32 – 2nd) and walks (23 – 9th). Ratliff is the third Cal State San Bernardino woman to earn Most Valuable Player, and the first since 2008 (Jordan Dahl).

Most Valuable Pitcher honors belong to Chico State, marking three straight seasons a Wildcat has taken top honors from the circle. Brooke Larsen, who transferred to Chico State after playing a season at Academy of Art was also named Newcomer of the Year for her efforts on the diamond. Larson has been dominant in her first year in a Chico State uniform, compiling a league-best 150 strikeouts with 17 wins and six shutouts to her name. Opponents hit a paltry .177 against the sophomore from Sacramento, and she gives up just 1.68 earned runs per game.

Two other Chico State players join Larsen as first-team selections: junior shortstop Kristen Worley and Amanda Flores, a senior designated player.

Freshman of the Year belongs to San Francisco State’s Brylynn Vallejos. In her first year of collegiate softball, Vallejos has been nearly unstoppable at the plate for the Gators. The Reno, Nev., native has been hitting at a clip of .462, good for 16th nationally and best in the CCAA. The outfielder stands in second in the country in total hits (90) and crossed home plate 51 times in 2019. Vallejos also leads the league in stolen bases with 32 and total bases with 127 as was recently named a top 25 finalist for 2019 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year.

Patti Gerckens led UC San Diego to the regular-season crown for the first time since 2011, when she was also named CCAA Coach of the Year. Her third time receiving individual acclaim, Gerckens is in her 27th season at the helm of the Tritons where she has compiled an impressive 752-599 (.557), all-time record since 1993.

A league-best four UC San Diego players dot the All-CCAA first team, as senior third baseman Maddy Lewis is joined by a trio of underclassmen in sophomores Robyn Wampler and Sherriah Harrington, and freshman Keila Bosinger.

Also earning first-team honors is a Sonoma State pair Jordyn Martinez and Alee Balanon, and two from Cal State Monterey Bay in Courtney Hennings and Hayley Fein. Cal State East Bay’s Sarah Fukushima and Damari Simon of Cal State Dominguez Hills round out the 15 first-team selections.

Six first teamers are repeat winners (Fein, Harrington, Lewis, Ratliff, Wampler, Worley), and five are seniors. Each of the CCAA’s 11 teams that sponsor softball have at least honoree named to the one of the three all-conference teams. Interestingly, all but two of the 32 players to earn distinction hail from California.
